Humble Beginnings
June 2012
My name is Kara Mahan and I am a teacher, business owner, wife, and mother. Many years ago, my husband and I decided that when we started a family I would stay home to raise our children. We both grew up having mom at home and look back at that time with fond memories. When the time came, I stepped away from my classroom to be home with our daughter. Being a Montessorian, I wanted nothing more than to share this wonderful method and these beautiful materials with my own child. So, I created a small infant classroom in our home. As she grew, so did the need for more space and advanced work. The search began for a bigger facility in a new town.
Making a House Our Home
June 2014
After months of searching, we found our new home in Frederick, Colorado. I immediately started creating a space that would not only meet my daughter's growing needs but also the needs of our growing family. At this point, we had gained a few new extended family members seeking Montessori education and quality care for their children. One year later, my husband and I welcomed a son and our 'ohana grew a little more. In 2016, our in-home preschool opened to the public for the first time. We were able to expand our program to officially include and infant, toddler, and primary level. With additional students enrolled it also became necessary to add a staff member, Sandy Lommel. Sandy is not only my mom, and a registered nurse, but the glue that holds us all together some days. I am very proud that our program has grown to include three generations of it's founding family, extended family, friends of family.

Looking Forward to the Future
November 2018
In my initial Montessori training many years ago, I learned the simple concept of following the child. That single concept has forever changed my path in life. I have been so lucky to have the opportunity to stay home with my children and offer them an authentic Montessori education through their formative years. I am excited that we have added so many great families and friends along the way, and really look forward to the road ahead. It is my intention to continue expanding our programs and find a forever home for 'Ohana Montessori in a more traditional child care center setting in the upcoming year. Thank you to all who have helped us get to where we are today. We appreciate your continued support and look forward to watching our family and programs grow in the future.
